Advanced Sensors for Contaminant Detection
Thursday, November 1, 2012 - 10:54am to 11:34am
Nanocrystals of II-VI compound semiconductors (also known as quantum dots or QDs) have unique properties, including size-tunable photoluminescence, narrow emission and broad absorption spectra, high quantum yields, high extinction coefficients, and high photochemical stability, which make them attractive for biological sensing applications that combine detection sensitivity and multiplexing capabilities. This presentation will provide an overview of the state of the art in synthesis, functionalization, and applications of these materials in biological sensors. Research focusing on II-VI nanocrystals that are free from heavy metal ions will be emphasized, including our own group’s work on ZnSe-based nanocrystals. Examples of novel QD-based assays for rapid quantitative detection of biomolecular targets, such as DNA, antibodies, and various proteins will be presented. Challenges and opportunities for commercial development of such technologies in the areas of point-of-care diagnostics, emergency care, and environmental monitoring will be discussed.
