Over the past year and half the Pharma Industry has seen the first two approvals for the continuous manufacturing of Oral Solid Dosages. This being further evidence that it is no longer a question of â??ifâ? continuous manufacturing will come to the pharma, but rather â??when/howâ? the transformation will take place. From a technical point of view it has been acknowledged by most that Loss-in-weight (LIW) feeding is the most critical operation to continuous Oral Solid Dosage products. In recent years a much deeper fundamental understanding of the LIW feeding process has been developed. This understanding includes a material property driven modeling frame work for predicting performance. The goal of this talk is to present a framework for model based design and optimization of feeders. The key deliverable of this approach would be the ability to tailor each feeder for the specific material properties of the raw material it is feeding.
