Honorary Session for Prof. Steve Cramer II (Invited Talks)
Tuesday, November 7, 2023 - 5:18pm to 5:36pm
Cell therapy has emerged as promising treatments for various cancers, offering potential cures for previously incurable diseases. However, the current manufacturing methods for these therapies often face significant access challenges, such as high costs, limited scalability, and variability. To address these hurdles, we must reimagine cell therapy manufacturing to make it more industrial in nature. In honor of the distinguished career of Dr. Steve Cramer, this talk aims to highlight the how the learning from the world of biologics and bioprocessing industry can inspire us to accelerate the transformation of manufacturing in a new modality such as cell therapy. As a former graduate student under Dr. Cramer's guidance, I have had the privilege of witnessing his profound impact on the field of bio processing. Drawing from his legacy, this presentation will delve into my journey of translating Dr. Cramer's early teachings into the world of drug development including the recent advances in cell therapy manufacturing. Emphasizing the importance of process simplification, automation, and scale-up strategies, we will examine how these advancements can enhance manufacturing efficiency, reduce costs, and improve treatment accessibility. Harnessing the power of automation, analytics, process monitoring, we can ensure the consistent and reliable production of high-quality cell therapies. Cell therapy manufacturing is highly personalized and involves complex logistics in the end-to-end supply chain. The opportunity ahead is to leverage the learnings from industrialization of biologics and apply those to maximize access of cell therapy treatments while maintaining the need for personalized manufacture. In this talk I will share my perspectives and reflections on how bioprocess development has evolved across modalities. Together, let us continue the legacy of Dr. Steve Cramer by revolutionizing the field of bio processing and delivering the next generation of life-saving treatments to patients in need.
