Each year, AIChE conducts the Chem-E-Car Competition that tasks teams of college students with designing and building a shoebox-sized car powered by a chemical energy source that will safely travel a specific given distance and then stop utilizing a chemical reaction. In 2021, the Univ. of Toledo (UToledo) Chem-E-Car Team exhibited the entrepreneurial mindset through the application of curiosity, connections, and creating value in the construction of the zinc-nickel battery for their Chem-E-Car. They earned first place in the Annual Student Conference Chem-E-Car Competition (earning the H. Scott Fogler trophy) by stopping just 10 cm from the target distance of 21.05 m.
