The understanding of the all process variables and safety knowledge that influence the natural hazard exposure at chemical sites is often unknown and under recognized. Furthermore, it is rarely contained under existing Process Safety Management (PSM) programs. This is a necessary component of an exposed facility to minimize or prevent episodic releases or events that can cause significant property damage and business interruption. This paper explores the need to consider natural hazard events in existing PSM elements. It also provides event considerations for process hazard analysis and event response.
