Abstract
Batch distillation optimization is a continuous effort in every batch manufacturing facility. Process improvements are driven by increasing operating costs. It is therefore imperative to reduce, and when possible, eliminate wasteful practices in both equipment design and operating procedures.
This paper discusses the unfavorable impact of distillate back-mixing on batch distillation yields. Various common equipment design flaws are shown and design alternatives are presented for handling distillate with minimum back-mixing effect. In addition, a real-life example is presented showing how batch yields were improved by 3-6%.
