In a refinery operation, approximately 50% of the energy demand is for heaters and boilers with the largest process heater being the crude heater. Additionally, up to 10% of the energy demand is caused by crude oil fouling. With the continued focus on energy efficiency and the increased development of regulatory programs to reduce carbon emissions, an area where increased opportunities will be examined is the crude pre-heat train. This session examines opportunities where reductions in energy can occur in the design of the pre-heat train and identifying the causes of fouling which will include quantification and/or mitigation techniques.
