Daniel Lachos is Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Plastics Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML). During his graduate studies, he focused on characterization and thermochemical biomass conversion, including sugarcane straw, sugarcane bagasse and orange bagasse, by hydrothermal processes to produce valuable compounds as a biorefinery concept. As a postdoctoral research fellow at UML, his research focuses on converting plastic waste into valuable chemicals and clean fuels. He has studied different feedstocks such as linear low-density polyethylene and multilayer films. Utilizing thermochemical processes such as pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction, Daniel has successfully transformed plastic waste into environmentally beneficial fuels and aromatic chemicals. Collaborations with industrial partners like Braskem and Millipore have further enhanced his practical experience in addressing various plastic waste challenges, motivating him to develop a continuous hydrothermal process. Daniel has published 26 peer-reviewed articles, 3 book chapters and 1 patent.
