Dr. Stern applies his chemical engineering knowledge to the investigation and prevention of accidents, and the optimization of chemical processes. Dr. Stern specializes in experimental and numerical analysis of reactive systems through the application of thermodynamics, kinetics, heat and mass transport, and fluid dynamics principles. He has 5 years of experience in the design and analysis of electrochemical systems and gas separation systems. Dr. Stern possesses expertise in electrochemistry, heat and mass transfer phenomena, thermodynamics, chemical reaction kinetics, and separations technologies. He used his experience to design, construct, and test novel electrochemically-mediated amine scrubbing systems for carbon dioxide separations from post-combustion flue gases. Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Stern was a graduate research assistant in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For his work, Dr. Stern received the AIChE Separations Division Graduate Student Research Award in 2013.
