Mike began his career in 1978 researching risk assessment of major hazards. In 1984 took over responsibility for carrying out large scale experimental studies of vapour cloud explosions on oil and gas facilities. This included the explosions research conducted after the Piper Alpha disaster, which involved full scale tests at the DNV GL Spadeadam Testing and Research Site. He is now Senior Principal Consultant supporting both Spadeadam research projects and advising clients on the risks associated with major accident hazards. His more recent work has included participation in the Buncefield incident investigation as a member of the BMIIB Explosion Mechanism Advisory Group (and subsequent Joint Industry Project) and as an expert witness in the Civil litigation. He has also investigated over fifty explosion incidents including a major vapour cloud explosion in Jaipur, India in 2009.
