It is crucial to our nation’s prosperity and standard of living that the U.S. attain and maintain world-class levels of labor productivity (economic output per unit of labor) across the economy. In effect, labor productivity represents an upper limit on national incomes. This limit can be exceeded only for brief periods and under unusual circumstances.
In manufacturing, the keystone sector of any modern economy, automation is the essential ingredient in maximizing worker productivity. This includes deploying world-class levels of manufacturing automation, as well as maintaining world-class levels in the production of automation tools and software for domestic use and export.
