AIChE’s 2021 Doing a World of Good Gala will Celebrate Extraordinary Societal Contributions, Dec. 1 in New York City
Moderna; founders of Future of STEM Scholars Initiative, to receive honors
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) will spotlight the world-changing contributions of chemical engineers and the organizations that they serve during the AIChE Foundation’s 2021 Doing a World of Good Gala on Dec. 1. After presenting its 2020 Gala as a virtual event, the 2021 Gala returns to an in-person venue in New York City at The Metropolitan Club. An online component will be available for those who cannot travel to the in-person event.
This year’s gala is lauding the contributions of Moderna, the U.S.-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology company known for its development of the COVID-19 vaccine, as well as for its work with messenger RNA (mRNA), which has significantly improved the way that medicines are developed.
Moderna will be represented at the gala by Stéphane Bancel, the company’s Chief Executive Officer. Moderna and Bancel are being recognized “For leadership in the discovery and development of innovative solutions that have saved and improved lives through healthcare.”
AIChE will also present its Doing a World of Good Medal to its co-founding partners of the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI). In its inaugural year of 2021, FOSSI funded 151 scholarships of $40,000 each for students pursing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The medalists include FOSSI founding chair Mark Vergnano, Chairman of the Board of The Chemours Co.; founding partner Ashley Christopher, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of HBCU Week Foundation; and founding partner Chris Jahn, President and Chief Executive Officer at the American Chemistry Council.
Dinner chairs for the 2021 Gala are (as of Oct. 15): Bruce Chinn, Chief Executive Officer, Chevron Phillips Chemical; Jim Fitterling, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dow; Karen McKee, President, Exxon-Mobil Chemical Co.; Lori J. Ryerkerk, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, Celanese Corp.; John Y. Televantos, Senior Partner, Arsenal Capital Partners; and Michael Thien, Senior Vice President, Merck and Co., Inc.
The Institute’s annual gala is organized by the AIChE Foundation and raises funds to underwrite AIChE’s Doing a World of Good campaign, which supports programs that bring chemical engineering expertise to bear for the benefit of society.
Two special virtual events are being scheduled to take place in advance of the Dec. 1 gala: The Rising Stars Leadership Workshop for Women in Engineering, and The Equity in Engineering Leadership Forum — the latter is an executive-development...
