This course has replaced ELA 909, Basics of Laboratory Safety.
Laboratory safety is important for undergraduate students working in unit operations or other laboratories, and faculty, graduate students, and industrial practitioners working in research laboratories. This module presents an introduction to laboratory safety and provides the content necessary to identify laboratory hazards, including chemical, equipment, and procedural hazards. The student will learn about the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), including hazard classes and labeling; the toxic, flammable, and reactive hazards of chemicals; equipment hazards, including electrical, compressed gases, and other hazards; and an introduction to industrial hygiene and personal protective equipment.
Unit 1
- List responsibilities of laboratory workers and supervisors
- Define the term “safety culture”
- Give examples of 4 strategies of inherently safer designs
- Give examples of preventive and mitigative safeguards
- Describe the purpose and contents of GHS safety data sheet (SDS) and GHS label and compare the GHS hazard identification method with the FNPA fire diamond
Unit 2
- List various types of toxicological hazards and common exposure limit measures
- List various types of flammability hazards, ways in which flammability hazards are characterized, and ways in which flammability hazards are mitigated
- Define “chemical reactivity” and describe situations that could present a chemical reactivity hazard
- Explain what a “biohazard” is, give examples of biohazards, and describe how biological agents are classified by risk level
Unit 3
- Describe laboratory equipment hazards associated with electrical devices, compressed gas cylinders, refrigerators, drying ovens, glassware, and lasers
Unit 4
- Describe the four steps to an industrial hygiene study
- Describe ways in which personal protective equipment protects workers from vapors, noise, and damage to the eyes, face and hands
Unit 5
- List and apply the eight steps needed to handle chemicals safely
