Safeguards are at the heart of managing hazards and risk.  They prevent or mitigate loss events such as fires, explosions and toxic releases. 

Preventive safeguards such as alarm response, safety instrumented systems and overpressure protection keep loss events from happening when an initiating event causes a process to deviate from normal operation.  Mitigative safeguards such as secondary containment, fire mitigation systems, and emergency response can reduce the impact of loss events.

This intermediate course, designed for juniors and seniors who are enrolled in upper-level chemical engineering classes, describes the various types of safeguards and some of their key considerations.  It also explains how safeguards relate to inherently safer design and independent protection layers, how the reliability of safeguards is calculated, and how to rightly consider safeguards in the context of process hazard analyses including HAZOP Studies.

This course is the third of four courses on "Hazards and Risk".  So that the student has the necessary background, taking ELA970 "Hazards and Risk: What Can Go Wrong", and ELA971 "Hazards and Risk: Introduction to Pressure Protection" are recommended before taking this course.  

In addition, it is recommended that the student have a basic understanding of (at least) toxicological hazards, fire and explosion hazards, and chemical reactivity hazards before taking this course.  The SAChE Undergraduate Process Safety Curriculum includes courses that cover these topics.
