SAChE® – Practical Process Safety 1

LIMITED TIME OFFER: Claim a 20% discount on eLearning courses with code YEAREND20.

Offer is valid until December 31st.

This course is the first of two courses on "Practical Process Safety." It sets the stage for Course 2 by providing brief overviews of the process safety foundations, process safety elements (i.e., RBPS), and how process safety risks can be effectively managed. (Course 2 is ELA987.) The focus of these two courses is on the equipment life cycle, since unexpected equipment failures can lead to the loss of containment of hazardous materials and energies.  Significant incidents that have caused harm to people, the environment, and property resulted when the preventive and mitigative barriers of the process were not designed adequately or have failed.

The combined course goal is to help students understand what can happen if the entire life cycle of process equipment is not managed adequately, and especially that they need to work with other Subject Matter Experts if they are unfamiliar with other stages in the equipment life cycle.

Unit 1

  • Describe the three essential process safety foundations (these foundations will be discussed in more detail in Unit 2)
  • Explain how these foundations include the Center for Chemical Process Safety Risk Based Process Safety elements (you have learned about the CCPS RBPS in other SAChE courses)
  • Explain how process safety risk is evaluated (this section is a review of what you have learned in other SAChE courses, as well)
  • Describe how risks are managed in the equipment life cycle
  • Introduce a Barrier Model

Unit 2

Describe how the equipment life cycle is affected by each of the three foundations:

  1. The first discussion will cover the Process Safety Culture and Leadership foundation, including cultural and leadership characteristics;
  2. The second discussion will cover the Process Safety Systems foundation, including Risk Based Process Safety (R-B-P-S) elements and intent of the system; and
  3. The final discussion in this unit will cover the Operational Discipline (O-D) foundation, including personal and organizational OD characteristics.

Unit 3

  • Describe how to build your competence;
  • Describe different roles and responsibilities;
  • Describe how to build your technical process safety knowledge; and •    Describe why an effective process safety program must have commitment from everyone.

This advanced course is for upper-level chemical engineering undergraduates who have had some exposure to process safety and the CCPS Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS) management system.

This course is also suitable for young professionals and for engineers who are transitioning to process safety management assignments.

    • The final discussion in this unit will cover the Operational Discipline (O-D) foundation, including personal and organizational OD characteristics

Unit 3:  Developing Competence and Commitment

  • Describe how to build your competence
  • Describe different roles and responsibilities
  • Describe how to build your technical process safety knowledge
  • Describe why an effective process safety program must have commitment from everyone
