It is important for those working in the chemical industry to have a general appreciation of the hazards associated with various materials. This course presents the major hazards of seven common chemicals and two classes of compounds.
These chemicals are covered in this course because of their wide usage and their involvement in serious industrial and transportation incidents. The chemical engineering student will be introduced to the hazards associated with these chemicals that they are likely to encounter during their engineering careers. They will also gain an understanding of where these chemicals are used, how they are stored and transported and what inherent characteristics make them hazardous.
Unit 1 (Ammonium Nitrate, Hydrogen and Ethylene):
- Identify the common names, physical states when stored and shipped, and primary applications
- Identify the primary hazards
- Identify the inherent characteristics that make these chemicals hazardous
- Describe incidents that have occurred involving these chemicals
Unit 2 (Chlorine and Ammonia):
- Identify their common names, the physical states in which they are generally stored and shipped, and their primary applications
- Identify the primary hazards associated with the chemicals
- Identify the inherent characteristics of these chemicals that make them hazardous
- Describe incidents that have occurred involving these chemicals
Units 3 (Organic Peroxides and Epoxides):
- Identify their common names, the physical states in which they are generally stored and shipped, and their primary applications
- Identify the primary hazards associated with the compounds
- Identify the inherent characteristics of these compounds that make them hazardous
- Describe incidents that have occurred involving these compounds
Unit 4 (Hydrogen Fluoride and Sulfuric Acid):
- Identify their common names, the physical states in which they are generally stored and shipped, and their primary applications
- Identify the primary hazards associated with the chemicals
- Identify the inherent characteristics of these chemicals that make them hazardous
- Describe incidents that have occurred involving these chemicals
This advanced course is for upper-level chemical engineering undergraduates who have had some exposure to process safety.
This course is designed to be of particular interest to those beginning their careers in the chemical industry - that is, primarily chemical engineering students and recent graduates. However, it might also be of interest to more experienced engineers who are moving into a new industry.
The hazards covered are discussed in broad terms. The course is intended to be taken in combination with other SACHE courses which more completely cover the various types of hazards discussed here, such as flammability and toxicity.
Students are encouraged to take the Level 2 (intermediate) courses first or become familiar with the subjects covered by the Level 2 courses by other means before taking this course.
