The Risk Based Process Safety Management System has several management elements that target a facility’s performance in controlling identified risks.
This module will examine four of those elements: Management of Change, Emergency Management, Operational Readiness, and Conduct of Operations. Each of these elements will be described in detail and numerous case studies will illustrate how deficient practice of the elements has led to unwanted safety incidents.
Unit 1:
- Describe a case study attributable to poor performance in MOC
- Describe key characteristics of MOC
- Give example of activities requiring MOC
- Describe a useful leading metric for assessing performance in management of change
Unit 2
- Describe a case study attributable to poor performance in emergency management
- Describe key characteristics of emergency management
- Give examples of activities requiring emergency management
- Describe a useful leading metric for assessing performance in emergency management
Unit 3
- Describe a case study attributable to poor performance in operational readiness
- Describe key characteristics of operational readiness
- Give examples of activities requiring operational readiness
- Describe a useful leading metric for assessing performance in operational readiness
Unit 4
- Describe a case study attributable to poor performance in conduct of operations
- Describe key characteristics of conduct of operations
- Give examples of activities requiring conduct of operations
- Describe a useful leading metric for assessing performance in conduct of operations
This advanced course is for upper-level chemical engineering undergraduates who have some knowledge of process safety management concepts. Process safety practitioners also will find this course to be a good introduction to the CCPS Risk Based Process Safety system. It will provide useful knowledge for those developing an initial facility process safety management program, or looking for some guidance on facility auditing or utilizing metrics. It will also serve as a useful refresher for those practitioners aspiring to achieve the CCPS process safety credential.
This course concentrates on four elements that are part of the "Manage Risk" pillar of Risk Based Process Safety. Students should be aware that to complete their understanding of all the elements that are part of the "Manage Risk" pillar, other courses may need to be taken.
Students are encouraged to take the Level 2 (intermediate) courses or become familiar with the subjects covered by the Level 2 courses by other means before taking this course.
Unit 1 - Management of Change
Unit 2 - Emergency Management
Unit 3 - Operational Readiness
