EMPOWER A Bottom-Up Approach to Cultivate a Climate of Inclusivity

Fostering an inclusive academic environment is paramount to the success of all academia stakeholders: students, staff, and faculty. As leaders in the College of Engineering at a premier innovative public institution such as UC Berkeley, it is imperative that we fulfill our mission to: educate inclusive leaders, create knowledge equitably, and serve a diverse society.

To fulfill our mission and promote a culture that actively promotes practices that advance equity for all members of our engineering community, the Empowering Engineers for Positive Change Certificate Program (EMPOWER) was launched in Fall 2019. The EMPOWER workshops were specifically designed to equip us with tools to: a) increase awareness of their own personal biases, and how biases are exerted via personal interactions and institutional practices; b) interrupt exclusionary behaviors or actions that perpetuate inequality; and c) adopt evidence-based practices that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

In this webinar Associate Dean for Students Lisa Pruitt and Director of Community Engagement and Inclusive Practices Dr. Fatima Alleyne will introduce attendees to the strategies employed by the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley to engage, promote, and build capacity for the advancement of DEI with an emphasis on:

  • Diversity: Recruiting and embodying diversity of perspective, expertise, experiences, cultures, and ethnicity.
  • Community Engagement: Using focus groups, interviews, surveys to inform content and delivery.
  • Execution: Employing various mechanisms to deliver interactive sessions to increase participant engagement.
  • Continual Learning: Providing resources, tools, and safe spaces to continually interrupt exclusionary practices and inequities.
