An Engineer Abroad

Spurred by her own life-changing experience with study abroad as an undergraduate student, Dr. Amber Genau developed a new study abroad opportunity for students at her university in 2012.  She will be sharing her experiences creating and leading this program regularly over the last eight years.  The program is based around a three-week May term course entitled “The Evolution of Engineering Materials” which considers the effect of new engineering materials and material processing techniques on human civilization from the Stone Age through the present.

The course is taught in Germany, where the students participate in visits to universities, research labs, and industrial production facilities as well as museums and cultural sites.  The webinar will cover the development of the course itself (which can be used as a technical elective for both undergrad and graduate students), logistics of organizing and financing such a trip, and examples of how the experience has impacted the students who participated.
