GIS for ChEs – An Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

This webinar provides a chemical engineer’s basic introduction to geographic information systems (GIS) – its tools, methods, applications and trends. Though mutually exclusive from chemical engineering, geospatial analysis can be complementary in many research, commercial and environmental applications.

The concept of PLACE has never been more prominent and ubiquitous in our personal and professional lives. Location intelligence is rigorously integrated into supply chain management for most of our goods and services. We carry multiple devices that constantly tell us (and others) where we are. Maps have evolved into sophisticated, interactive, decision-support systems. The confluence of big data, remote sensing, and communication technology has revolutionized our ability to incorporate spatial analysis into a broad spectrum of application domains. A geography information system (GIS) is the tool which enables the transformation of georeferenced data into vital information and practical knowledge. The geographic information science traverses many other disciplines and fields.

"Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things."
