This presentation provides an overview of significant changes to IEC 61511, including BPCS protection layer credit, quantitative analysis for multiple instrumented protection layers achieving equivalent to SIL 4, fault detection and response, hardware fault tolerance, prior use, security assessment, and metrics.
International delegates from around the world have been working on IEC 61511 Edition 2 for more than 5 years. These technical experts started with a large ‘wish list’ of several hundred comments created by soliciting feedback from the delegates and their national committees on the successes and challenges in implementing the standard on new and existing safety instrumented systems (SIS). This wish list will culminate in the release of the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) in 2015. The revised standard contains significant changes and additions to the original publication. Any systems planned for installation in 2016 should consider the new and revised requirements.
