Most job seekers consider the interview the most stressful part of a job search. While landing an interview is exciting, the stress of preparing for the interview often overtakes those moments of elation. Some simple strategies, however, can help you to capitalize on the job interview and stand out from other qualified candidates. These strategies focus primarily on honing your soft skills to prepare for the interview.
Play to your strengths. Engage employers by preparing key information for your conversational toolbox, including relevant accomplishments, qualifications, cultural alignment, and values. “Soul search and decide what impact you can have on the organization to guide the interview,” says Margaret Sherlock, retired Vice President and Regional Director of Staff Council at Selective Insurance. If, for example, your unique, relevant strength is developing refinery configurations, describe how you led refinery optimization studies and improved efficiency, controls, throughput, and profitability.
