Chemical engineering practitioners, safety professionals, and business leaders will explore the breadth of opportunities available across the chemical engineering field at the 2022 AIChE Spring Meeting and 18th Global Congress on Process Safety (GCPS). After presenting the 2020 and 2021 conferences virtually, AIChE is conducting its 2022 Spring Meeting and GCPS in person at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, TX, Apr. 10–14. Sessions will be recorded and made available online beginning the subsequent week.

In addition to covering chemical engineering’s core competencies and hot topics, highlights of the 2022 Spring Meeting include the in-person debut of new topical conferences that explore heat exchanger technologies, as well as progress in industrial wastewater management and reuse. The Spring Meeting program will also continue its examination of chemical engineering’s role in modern manufacturing, incorporating process intensification techniques and approaches related to Industry 4.0. Additional Spring Meeting topical conferences include the 34th Ethylene Producers’ Conference, as well as tracks devoted to refinery processing, gas utilization, clean energy, hydrogen safety, waste plastics, upstream engineering and flow assurance, workforce dynamics, and more — along with comprehensive programming presented by AIChE’s Fuels and Petrochemicals Div.

The Spring Meeting and GCPS will kick off on Monday, Apr. 11 with the AIChE Government and Industry Leaders (AGILE) Award Lecture — to be presented by Lori Ryerkerk, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President of Celanese Corp. (See article, p. 55).

Luncheon speakers include Jennifer Wilcox, Acting Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (Apr. 11); and Erika Peterman, Senior Vice President of Chemical Intermediates North America at BASF (Apr. 12). Other highlights include plenaries, panel discussions, poster sessions, and exhibits. Attendees will also enjoy opportunities to gather in-person with colleagues during session breaks.

Reduced meeting registration rates are in effect through Feb. 28. Details about the Spring Meeting’s featured events, keynote speakers, and special sessions will appear online and in the March issue of CEP.

Focus on: 18th Global Congress on Process Safety

Organized by AIChE’s Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) and the Safety and Health Div., the Global Congress on Process Safety provides a forum for safety engineers, plant managers, and process designers from organizations around the globe to assess technologies and share strategies to avoid incidents, manage risk, ensure plant safety, and improve process safety management (PSM) programs across the chemical process industries (CPI).

The stage is set for the Global Congress on Apr. 11 with a Welcome Plenary Session, featuring a keynote talk by Robert Johnston, Senior Vice President at ExxonMobil Chemical Co. Core programming at the Global Congress begins with the 56th Annual Loss Prevention Symposium, highlighting lessons learned from incident investigations, and including consideration of topics such as facility siting, emergency planning and response, risk assessment, explosion prevention, fire protection, safety systems, mitigation technologies, and others.

The 37th CCPS International Conference promotes systematic process safety management, with sessions dedicated to the components of effective PSM programs. Related topics include workforce competencies, safety culture, leadership factors, proactive approaches to process safety, select CCPS projects, and more.

CCPS’s vision for universal process safety excellence is showcased at sessions that present Perspectives on Process Safety from Around the Globe. With contributions from a breadth of organizations, the program features presentations in Spanish and Portuguese (as well as English), with additional perspectives from China.

The 24th Process Plant Safety Symposium offers best-practices, perspectives, and methods that can contribute to stronger safety cultures within plants and among personnel. Topics on the agenda include process safety management, hazard...
