In late 2023, the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) announced the renewal of the RAPID Manufacturing Institute for the next five years. One of the priorities for RAPID in this new phase is decarbonizing the chemical process industries. RAPID aims to achieve this through projects that demonstrate a reduction of lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions or improved energy efficiency.
RAPID undertook a structured roadmapping process in 2024 where stakeholders performed a gap analysis to identify the barriers that, if addressed, would have the biggest impact toward realizing the decarbonization goals. RAPID identified four industrial application areas in critical need of advanced decarbonization technologies: commodity chemicals, specialty chemicals, low-carbon fuels, and carbon circularity and renewable feedstocks (Figure 1). In addition, RAPID held independent roadmap workshops focused on batch-to-continuous and technology valuation best practices.
