Enhancing Process Safety in Industry

With the rising interest in artificial intelligence (AI), many chemical plants are exploring its potential to improve productivity, efficiency, and process safety in plant operations. However, relying solely on AI-based operations in process plants may present significant challenges due to AI systems’ inherent opaqueness, lack of adaptability, and susceptibilities to perturbations.

In the July AIChE Journal Perspective article, “Process Safety 4.0: Artificial Intelligence or Intelligence Augmentation for Safer Process Operation?” authors Rajeevan Arunthavanathan, Zaman Sajid, Md. Tanjin Amin, Yuhe Tian, Faisal Khan, and Efstratios Pistikopoulos explore whether AI alone is sufficient or if intelligence augmentation is needed for a safer solution.

Industry 4.0 technologies, such as AI, industrial internet of things (IIoT), cloud computing, and big data, are driving technological advancement in the chemical industries. This integration creates smarter, more-efficient production environments and highlights AI’s limitations in process safety. For instance, AI relies on historical data, making it crucial to train AI with similar incident knowledge to detect and...
