Process Safety Progress Highlight: Managing Process Safety During COVID-19 and Beyond

COVID-19 has necessitated transformational shifts in the way organizations in the chemical process industries (CPI) approach risk management and work practices. The December 2020 issue of Process Safety Progress features the article “Frontlines of COVID-19: Lead, Learn and Cure.” The article, based on a panel discussion held at the virtual AIChE 2020 Spring Meeting and Global Congress on Process Safety, addresses how organizations are managing COVID-19 risks through corporate leadership, enhanced safety precautions, and cultural shifts based on the latest medical developments.

During the spring and summer of 2020, the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) held several virtual meetings to discuss new operating practices to manage process safety under lockdowns and restrictions necessitated by the pandemic. “During these discussions, the risk-based process safety framework was used as an approach to develop new insights for managing process safety during COVID-19,” write Shakeel Kadri, Executive Director and CEO of CCPS, and Ana Davis, head of health, safety, and environment (HSE) at Syngenta North America, in the foreword to the article.
