 This course will introduce students to the group of management elements residing in the “Learning from Experience” foundation block of the CCPS Risk Based Process Safety system. The four-risk based process safety elements covered in this course are: Incident Investigation, Measurements and Metrics, Auditing, Management Review and Continuous Improvement. This course will provide undergraduate students an introduction to these important management elements not widely found in student chemical engineering texts. The course is an opportunity for the student to get a leg up on these important subjects before entering chemical engineering practice. The numerous case studies and examples used will illustrate how ineffective practice of these elements led to adverse results in the process industries.

Unit 1

  • Differentiate between a process safety incident and a personnel safety incident;
  • Identify, in chronological order, the major steps in an incident investigation;
  • Recognize the importance of tracking near misses;
  • Describe a case study attributable to, or impacted by, incident investigation; and
  • Describe a useful leading metric for assessing performance in incident investigation.

Unit 2

  • Recognize the difference between lagging and leading metrics;
  • Differentiate between process safety and other metrics;
  • Recognize the importance of tracking and interpreting metric data
  • Describe a case study attributable to, or impacted by, measurement and metrics; and
  • Describe a useful leading metric for assessing performance in measurement and metrics.

Unit 3

  • Describe a case study attributable to, or impacted by, auditing;
  • Describe a useful leading metric for assessing performance in auditing;
  • State what’s required for a successful process safety audit;
  • List challenges the audit team often encounters; and
  • Identify both positive and deficient findings when auditing.

Unit 4

  • State the importance of management review and continuous improvement;
  • Describe a case study attributable to, or impacted by, management review and continuous improvement; and
  • Describe a useful leading metric for assessing performance in management review and continuous improvement.

This advanced course is for upper-level chemical engineering undergraduates who have had some exposure to process safety. This course is also suitable for young professionals and for engineers who are transitioning to process safety engineering or process safety management system assignments.
