The Flint Water Crisis - Explore What Occurred and How

The Flint water crisis created a perfect storm of drinking water issues, exposing 100,000 residents to unsafe drinking water.  Join us to revisit what happened and how.

In 60 minutes, you’ll explore how the Flint, Michigan water crisis arose. You’ll learn about the decision to switch to the corrosive Flint River as a drinking water source and the failure to enforce federally mandated corrosion control treatment of the water. The drinking water issues that followed exposed Flint residents to severe public health risks of lead-tainted water. You’ll learn about the “open science” research collaboration between Virginia Tech’s Flint Water Study team and Flint residents and how this helped educate residents about the severe public health risks of lead-tainted water. You’ll also learn how the study helped bring attention to the glaring issues within the current drinking water legislation and aging water infrastructure and fueled the debate on “safe” drinking water in America.

Take a look at your agenda:

  • Events that led to the Flint water crisis
  • The Virginia Tech study and what it revealed
  • How the Virginia Tech team fought the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. EPA
  • Glaring issues within drinking water legislation and aging water infrastructure
