My cousins live on Nantucket. Being on an island, residents and businesses are very concerned with landfills and trash disposal, since a lot of trash, garbage, and discarded items have to be shipped elsewhere off the island. They have an area I was really impressed with, called “Take It or Leave It” (TIOLI). Residents can take items there that would normally go into the trash stream or, at best, recycled. With a few volunteers and storage and viewing areas, folks donate items and then others can come and take whatever they want. You see furniture, books, clothing, magazines, electronics, smaller appliances (no refrigerators allowed).
