“There’s an Ayurvedic philosophy that you should be as mindful about what you put on your skin as you are about what you eat,” says Sravya Adusumilli, chemical engineer and founder of eco-conscious makeup company Mango People. This is the principle that really spoke to Adusumilli when she founded her own business developing plant-powered cosmetics inspired by Ayurveda — an ancient system of holistic medicine natively practiced in India.
Adusumilli was born in India and lived there until the age of 10 before immigrating to Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada. From a young age, she knew that she wanted to be an entrepreneur. One instance that really drew her to the idea of having her own business came from watching TV. The segment featured a businessman who, nearing the end of his life, announced that he was donating large sums of money to charity. After discussing that particular broadcast with her father, he said, “if you make millions, you can give away millions,” which sparked her interest in entrepreneurship.
