AIChE® VCU Student Chapter Virtually Celebrate PRIDE Over Ice Cream

In the midst of midterms week, the AIChE Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) student chapter organized a Zoom gathering to celebrate PRIDE, how to be an ally and the importance of LGBTQ+ safe zones on campus.

To celebrate the LGBTQ+ & Allies Virtual Student Ice Cream Social, VCU student chapter secretary, Jimmy Nguyen, along with his fellow peers distributed nearly 50 swag bags and delicious ice cream bars to students and faculty on campus. Students expressed much appreciation and excitement that VCU was hosting this event for the community. It was a highlight of the semester especially with the university shutdown and classes being held virtually. In addition, other members of the VCU community stopped by to show their support as allies.

An evening Zoom hosted by the VCU student chapter leaders included a  detailed and informative presentation on helpful resources including free help hotlines, online support groups and how to share your preferred gender pronoun on campus and in the workplace. It was an event that highlighted how we all can come together to build a sense of belonging, unity and strengthen the LGBTQ+ & Allies community at VCU.

Thank you to our generous AIChE LGBTQ+ & Allies Initiative endowment donors whose contributions made the virtual ice cream social possible. The LGBTQ+ & Allies initiative is A core priority of the Foundation’s Doing a World of Good campaign and include educational and social activities that  advance the goals of equity, diversity and inclusion of the chemical engineering profession.
