The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) Celebrates Its First Graduates

The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) marked a major milestone, celebrating its first class of college graduates in a virtual event.

94% of everything in the world has chemistry in it. When you get involved in the industry, you become an essential part of everyday life. The products and technology we deliver to the marketplace have a huge impact on the quality of human life and our environment."  Mark Costa, Chairman & CEO of Eastman and FOSSI Advisory Board Chair

The program began with an inspiring video featuring the 2021 FOSSI seniors, followed by remarks from Mark Costa, Chairman & CEO of Eastman and FOSSI Advisory Board Chair, and Ashley Christopher, Esq., Founder & CEO of HBCU Week.

Costa congratulated the scholars and pointed out that “a STEM background is by far one of the best skillsets any one can have in the working world.”

He also encouraged students to consider the chemical industry, noting that “94% of everything in the world has chemistry in it. When you get involved in the industry, you become an essential part of everyday life. The products and technology we deliver to the marketplace have a huge impact on the quality of human life and our environment.”

Christopher referenced the lifelong impact of an HBCU education, telling scholars “I am in awe of our first FOSSI graduating class. In addition to the education you received, the knowledge you’ve acquired at your HBCU has prepared you for something very unique.

“For a four-year-period you have been able to look to your left and right and not be the minority. You have formed relationships that will last a lifetime and have access to a vast network of future leaders.

“And one day you will look up and acknowledge all the work and effort and experience you had that has allowed you to show up and shine in your individual careers.

“I look forward to seeing your names in lights. Congratulations FOSSI Class of 2025!”

Both speakers acknowledged the generosity and enthusiastic engagement of FOSSI sponsors and volunteers who have supported these students to ensure their success.
