In 2016, the AIChE Foundation advanced its mission to make the world a better and safer place through chemical engineering by putting your gifts to work in the following transformative areas: 

Safety and Ethical Practice

• The Undergraduate Process Safety Learning Initiative program is generously funded by support from early members of the Founders’ Circle: Dow, Chevron, LyondellBasell, DuPont, Eastman, Univar and over 100 other industry supporters
• Educating Faculty: In 2016, 4x as many professors trained in process safety at industry-led workshops; hosted by Dow, ADM, Cargill and Chevron at their facilities
• Student Education: 21,130 undergraduate SAChE certificates of process safety completed
• Module Development: 10 SAChE modules completed; 5 translated in Spanish

Research and Innovation

• The AIChE Foundation provided seed funding to help support the $70MM Department of Energy (DOE) grant to launch the Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment

  (RAPID) Manufacturing Institute 

• AIChE honored 3M, BASF, and Biogen for exemplary achievements in innovation at the AIChE 2016 gala, raising $350K to support chemical engineering students and professionals in entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity
• The gala also celebrated the innovative work of biotechnology pioneer Robert S. Langer, who received the 2015 Hoover Medal

  

Attracting and Retaining the Best and the Brightest

• The Fuels and Petrochemicals Division’s High School and Middle School OutReach Program engaged thousands of students across the country; encouraging them to stay in school, study math and science, and pursue chemical engineering in college
• In partnership with the American Chemical Society (ACS), the 2016 Disability Unity Convocation raised awareness of the needs and ingenious contributions of people with disabilities, in particular AIChE members with disabilities 
• In partnership with the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the 2016 AIChE Reception for LGBT+ Members and Allies took a leadership role among engineering societies in creating a welcoming environment for the LGBT community working in STEM
• Eight travel grants were awarded to international student chapter leaders from China, Colombia, Nigeria, Malaysia, Honduras, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, and Pakistan to attend the 2016 Annual Student Conference

Education, Training and Career Development

• The 35 Under 35 Awards program was created by the Young Professionals Committee to recognize exceptional young leaders, launching at the 2017 AIChE Annual Meeting
• AIChE’s Global Undergraduate Student Video Competition produced 2-5 minute videos to educate and inspire high school students and communities to learn more about chemical engineers and what they do

Changing Perceptions

• Through our partnership with Engineers without Borders (EWB-USA), we have supported 30 chemical engineering students doing humanitarian projects in over 10 countries, impacting the lives of 26,000 people
• The Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE) were granted to three chemical engineering students who presented their work on Capitol Hill and published their research in the September 2016 edition of the WISE Journal of Engineering and Public Policy

Building the Endowment

• AIChE Institute Lecture was renamed and endowed in honor of thermodynamics pioneer John M. Prausnitz
• The Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) scholarship program was endowed to ensure the education and training of future minority chemical engineers
