Chemical engineering is constantly evolving as a field, especially as we continue to learn more about sustainability and our impact on the environment. This year, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a report titled, New Directions for Chemical Engineering, as an update to a similar report by the National Academies in 1988. The newly published report recognizes that challenges and opportunities in chemical engineering are much different today than they were nearly 40 years ago, and that chemical engineering must now move in new directions. The report notes that “the field of chemical engineering today faces opportunities and challenges not only to innovate for the future, but also to innovate in ways that repair the unintended consequences of the past.” In particular, sustainability is now a critical goal, and it must be encouraged and regulated through public policy...
