The RAPID Manufacturing Institute cooperative agreement was renewed on Oct. 23, 2023, by the Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) of the U.S. Dept. of Energy for an additional $40 million of federal funding over five years. This additional funding will allow RAPID to continue to focus on advanced process technologies for decarbonizing the chemicals and fuels industries.

RAPID is conducting several roadmapping activities with participants from industry, academia, and national laboratories to identify and prioritize the development of technologies that will be most impactful. Much like the original roadmapping efforts that RAPID led in 2017, the 2024 roadmapping process will inform the selection of technical projects for the next five years.

The 2017 RAPID roadmapping process, jointly hosted with AIChE, involved three phases:

  1. Gap analysis specific to each focus area
  2. Roadmapping workshops
  3. Communication of results.

During gap analysis, a working team was established, with team members selected from RAPID members and prospective members. AIChE facilitators worked with the team to identify and analyze gaps, guided by a specific problem statement for each focus area. The original RAPID roadmapping workshops were conducted in July 2017 to assess the gaps identified by the working teams and identify any additional gaps that were missed. The workshops aligned participants on the key gaps in each focus area and central themes that spanned the scope of the Manufacturing Institute. After evaluating the information collected during the workshops, RAPID and AIChE summarized the roadmapping efforts in a report for RAPID members, as well as a publicly available summary booklet.

The goals of the 2017 roadmapping process were to:

  • Define gaps within each of the focus areas that significantly prevent the deployment of...
