Nomination Instructions

Rules, Criteria and Submission Requirements

  1. Applicants must be AIChE student members at the time of the nomination and be entering their third or final year of a 4 year program in Chemical Engineering or equivalent for a 5 year co-op program.
  2. Selection of winners will be based on the following criteria:
    1. The applicant’s academic record, minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0.
    2. The applicant’s leadership and participation in either the school’s AIChE student chapter or other university sponsored campus activity outlined in the leadership activities essay.
    3. Applicant’s career goals in the chemical engineering process industries as outlined in the career essay.
  3. Only students attending ABET accredited schools in the U.S, Canada, and Mexico* are eligible.
  4. Limited to one nomination per AIChE Student Chapter per year.
  5. Awardees will be notified by October 1 and will be required to provide tax informaton (Social Security Number for U.S. residents) in order to receive payment. Award prize must be claimed by December 31.
*Preference will be given to Mexican universities participating in ABET’s Equivalent Education Program
 

Instructions for submitting an application

A complete application for the AIChE John J. McKetta Undergraduate Scholarship Award must contain a copy of each of the following items (each letter should contain an original signature to be scanned and uploaded). All applications are submitted online.
 
From the student:
  • A completed application submitted online.
  • A maximum three page (750 word) essay outlining the applicant's career goals in the Chemical Engineering process industries.
  • It is preferred/ strongly encouraged that the nominee describe leadership activities in either the schools AIChE Student Chapter or other university sponsored campus activity. 
 
From the college:
  • A minimum of two letters of recommendation (in English). One nomination letter must be from the AIChE student chapter advisor, and the other from either a department faculty or technical work supervisor (internship or REU supervisor).
  • Official copy of student transcript sent (by the school) to AIChE.

Environmental Division Graduate Student Paper Award

PresentationThe award is presented at a designated function of the Environmental Division at the AIChE Annual Meeting, which the winner is expected to attend.
Nomination Instructions

Selection criteria include:

  1. The graduate student must be a member of AIChE at the time of submission.
  2. The work presented must be carried out while the graduate student is enrolled at a university with an accredited chemical engineering program.
  3. The graduate student must be the primary author (faculty advisors may be co-authors).
  4. The paper must describe original research (experimental, numerical, or theoretical) or design; papers consisting of literature reviews are not permitted.
  5. The paper must be suitable for publication in a refereed journal.
  6. The paper must represent a contribution to environmental protection through the application of chemical engineering.
  7. The paper may not be submitted for another AIChE award this year.  It is permitted to submit a paper from a previous year if it has not already received an award.

Nomination for the award should include:

  • A single nomination letter detailing the student’s strengths and accomplishments
  • A single paper contributing to environmental science and engineering fundamentals or applications

Papers will be judged on quality, technical content, writing and organization. Nominations may be submitted by any member of AIChE. Faculty, Departments and graduate student research mentors are encouraged to nominate candidates. Nominations must be submitted to Kirti Yenkie (yenkie@rowan.edu), 1st Vice Chair, by July 1, 2024

Selection criteria include:

  1. Significant discoveries, research, or development, successfully implemented on a commercial scale.
  2. Outstanding chemical engineering contribution(s) in the field of design, operation or production management which led to significant technological improvements.
  3. Distinguished service as a chemical engineering educator, with an emphasis on application of chemical engineering principles to forest products industry technologies.
  4. Outstanding Service to the Division

Nominees must have presented a paper (or papers) at one of the division's symposia describing his or her original contribution(s) in the application of chemical engineering in the forest products or related industries.

Minority Affairs Community's William W. Grimes Award for Excellence in Chemical Engineering

Nomination Instructions
This award is selected annually from nominations received by the MAC Awards Committee. A complete nomination must be submitted by an AIChE member and include the following components:


1. One (1) statement by nominator indicating nominee’s contributions to the chemical engineering profession and as a role model for younger underrepresented minority chemical engineers
2. Nominee’s CV or résumé
 

Selection criteria include:

  • The nominee is a chemical engineer.
  • The nominee has demonstrated outstanding technical, business or related achievements.
  • The nominee has voluntarily given time and effort to help increase the interest and/or performance of members of the underrepresented minority groups in science, math, engineering and related areas either in an educational or business environment.



Nomination Form

The Minority Affairs Community presents this award in honor of William W. Grimes, the first African-American Fellow of AIChE. This award recognizes a chemical engineer's outstanding achievements in the chemical engineering profession and as a distinguished role model for minorities.

Donald F. & Mildred Topp Othmer Scholarship Awards

Rules, Criteria and Submission Requirements

  1. Only one nomination will be accepted from each AIChE Student Chapter. In the event that there is more than one qualified member of a student chapter or club, the advisor must select using the criteria below, which member to nominate. 
  2. Applicants must be AIChE student members at the time of the nomination and undergraduates in Chemical Engineering during the 2024 – 2025 academic year. Nominees must have completed approximately 50% of their degree requirement at the start of the 2024-2025 academic years (i.e. junior standing in chemical engineering in a 4 year program or equivalent for a 5 year co-op program). The chapter advisor may nominate a student who will complete the chemical engineering baccalaureate degree requirements in mid year (i.e. after one semester or one or two quarters), but such nominees, if selected, will receive prorated awards.  
  3. Nomination must be made by the Student Chapter Advisor.
  4. Selection of winners will be based on the following criteria:
    1. The applicant’s academic record.
    2. The applicant’s participation in AIChE Student Chapter, and other professional activities as outlined by the Student Chapter advisor in his/her nomination letter.
    3. The support of the nominee by the Student Chapter Advisor.
    4. Applicant’s career objectives and plans as outlined in his/her career essay.
  5. Cash awards totaling $15,000 will be made for use during the 2024-2025 academic year; individual awards for the full academic year will be $1,000. Awardees will be notified by October 1 and then required to provide individual tax information (social security number for U.S. residents) in order to receive payment. All award prizes must be claimed by December 31.

A complete application for the AIChE Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer Scholarship Award will contain a copy of each of the following items (each letter should contain an original signature to be scanned and uploaded). All applications are submitted online.
 
From the student:
  • A completed application form submitted online.
  • A statement from the nominee not to exceed 300 words, outlining career plans and objectives in chemical engineering including immediate plans after graduation and long range career objectives.
 
From the college:
  • A letter of recommendation from the AIChE student chapter advisor containing verification of nominee’s GPA and projected completion date as well as an evaluation of the student’s academic performance and participation in AIChE and other professional activities.

The AIChE Minority Scholarship Award is presented to selected AIChE undergraduate student members annually. Applicants shall be required to be undergraduates in chemical engineering during the current academic year and be members of a minority group that is under-represented in chemical engineering.

Outstanding Student Chapter Advisor Award

Nomination Instructions

Selection criteria include:

  • Outstanding leadership as an advisor, particularly in creating enthusiasm and professionalism among the chapter members.
  • Summary of chapter activities.
  • Endorsement of the nomination by the head of the chemical engineering department is required.
  • Award winners cannot be re-nominated for at least ten years.

Nominee minimum qualifications for eligibility:

  • Advisor of a chartered AIChE Student Chapter for at least the last three years.
  • Not an Outstanding Student Chapter Advisor within the last ten years.
  • Active member of AIChE for at least the last three years and at the time of the nomination.

The nomination form may be used by an AIChE member or associate member to recommend an advisor for the award. Student Chapter members are qualified nominators.
 
The outstanding advisor will receive a cash award and a plaque. There will be up to two people selected for the award each year, and once having won the award, the winner(s) will no longer eligible to receive it again for ten years (refer to the below list of past outstanding advisors).

  1. Papers will be judged primarily on technical merit. The student must demonstrate depth and breadth of knowledge in the subject
  2. The work presented must be carried out while the student is enrolled at a university with an accredited chemical engineering program
  3. The student must be the primary author (faculty advisors may be co-authors)
  4. The paper must describe original research (experimental, numerical, or theoretical) or design; papers consisting of literature reviews are not permitted
  5. The paper must be suitable for publication in a refereed journal
  6. The student must be a member of AIChE

Nominations may be submitted by the student chapter advisor, the local section chair, or a member of AIChE who is not a student member.
