Sustainable Engineering Forum Student Paper Award

Details
Award

Up to three papers will be selected each year.  Student Award recipients will receive $500 for travel expenses associated with attending the AIChE annual meeting, plus a certificate of recognition.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Technical merit: The student(s) needs to provide original experimental data and/or published facts.
  2. Quality: The student(s) should have the paper published (or to be published) in a refereed journal within the last two years.  Papers submitted to (but not yet accepted to) technical journals may be considered for this award.
  3. Results: The content of the paper needs to describe significant (to society) results.
  4. Authorship: The student(s) needs to be the first author(s).
  5. Qualifications: The student(s) must be members of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the SEF.
  6. Nomination: Self-nomination is disallowed. Each nomination should include the AIChE Awards nomination form, a copy of the paper, the student’s membership information, and at least one (1) written support letter in addition to the nomination letter.

PresentationThe Award will be presented at the Sustainable Engineering Forum luncheon during the AIChE Annual National Meeting. The Forum may offer to present the award at a SEF plenary session.

Papers may be submitted directly by student(s) or another AIChE member. An e-mail copy of the paper and a completed nomination form are to be sent to the SEF Awards Committee Chair. The student may submit an application to join SEF, if not already a member.

This award is selected annually from nominations received by the MAC Awards Committee.  A complete nomination must be submitted by an AIChE member and include the following components:
 
1. One (1) statement by nominator indicating nominee’s contributions to the AIChE Minority Affairs Community, especially highlighting efforts to reduce underrepresentation of minorities in the chemical engineering profession and the impact of those efforts

Nomination Instructions

Criteria considered in selecting a winner include:

  1. The recipient shall have a considerable record of contributions to the environment through the application of chemical engineering for a period of at least fifteen (15) years of sustained professional activities shown by demonstrated leadership in such areas as research, teaching, engineering, or regulatory activities in either the public or private sector.
  2. The recipient shall have demonstrated the application of chemical engineering principles and technology in research into environmental problems and/or in development of innovative engineering solutions of these problems for the protection of the environment.
  3. The recipient shall have made a significant contribution in design, construction, operation, management, or consulting related to environmental protection facilities or enterprises. 
  4. The recipient shall have a considerable record of service in the activities of the Environmental Division of the AIChE.

All nominations for the Kern Award should be sent (electronically only) to beg23@case.edu by August 31 who will forward them to the Award Selection Committee. All nominations stand for three years and can be renewed once for another three years.
