AIChE Foundation Summer Grants Awarded

We are pleased to announce that the AIChE Foundation has awarded 5 project grants for the summer funding cycle. Bi-annually, the AIChE Foundation invites Operating Councils, Board Committees, and Industry Technology Groups to submit funding proposals for new, innovative projects that further the Institute's mission and enable the profession of chemical engineering to have a greater impact in the world.

Thanks to the generous support of our loyal donors to the Annual Fund, the AIChE Foundation Board of Trustees has awarded $116,250 in grant funding.

The next grant funding cycle will open on October 1st. For more information, please contact giving@aiche.org and or call 646-495-1342.

2016 Summer Grants:

  • Seed funding for RAPID Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment
The Institute is collaborating with the Department of Education (DOE) as they are launching the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) program on “Modular Chemical Process Intensification Institute for Clean Energy Manufacturing.” Process intensification represents the nexus of fundamental areas of chemical engineering in transport processes, separations, heterogeneous catalysis, kinetics and reaction engineering, process development and design. The value to the AIChE community is significant as the program is addressing the next generation of equipment and process design for construction of new processing plants in the United States.

  • Disability Unity Convocation
The Societal Impact Operating Council (SIOC) is hosting the Disability Unity Convocation and Reception at the 2016 Annual Meeting in San Francisco to raise awareness within the AIChE community about the needs and contributions of people with disabilities and AIChE members in particular. The contributions of chemical engineers with disabilities and the success of enterprises that employ them will be highlighted. In addition, how best to extend the Institute's inclusion efforts to members with disabilities with specific actions and programs will be discussed. The program will include activities to assess attendees’ perceptions of people with disabilities and the status of employees with disabilities in their workplaces. In addition, the program will include an opportunity for attendees to state the steps that are being taken and should be taken in workplaces and in AIChE to address the needs of chemical engineers with disabilities.

  • AIChE Reception for LGBT+ Members and Allies
In partnership with the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), AIChE is taking a leadership role among engineering societies in creating a welcoming environment for a constituency that has not always been welcomed and/or recognized in STEM occupations. This precedes the first successful presentation of the Safe Zone Workshop: Making AIChE and Our Workplaces Welcoming hosted by the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force of the SIOC at the 2016 Spring Meeting in Houston, Texas

The AIChE Reception for LGBT+ Members and Allies will be held at the 2016 Annual Meeting on Tuesday November 15 at 3:15pm. This will make AIChE visibly more welcoming to LGBT+ engineers. LGBT+ equality is of special and growing importance to young professionals and the entire millennial generation. It also strengthens corporate support for AIChE membership and activities by advancing the business case for diverse and inclusive work environments advocated by major chemical engineering employers.

  • AIChE's 35 Under 35 Awards
The Young Professionals Committee is launching a new awards program, 35 Under 35, to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments and service of Young Professional members in the tradition of AIChE as a whole. This new awards program will recognize outstanding young leaders who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in a particular category as compared to their peers early in their careers. The award program will also generate continued and increased involvement among those selected for the honor, as they will comprise some of our most promising rising AIChE members. The AIChE 35 Under 35 Awards strongly support the professional and personal development of early career chemical engineers and encourages increased involvement of outstanding young professionals within the activities of the Institute.

  • Chemical Engineer Entrepreneurs In-depth Short Interviews Series
The Center of Innovation and Entrepreneuring Excellence (CIEE) is launching a new interview series of roundtable discussions with high-profile entrepreneurs from various industries. The series will be featured at the 2016 Annual Meeting in San Francisco and serve as an opportunity for AIChE members to be exposed to successful entrepreneurs that have started unique business and product solutions answering current and up-coming problems. The entrepreneurs will provide students and professionals with insight on the evolution of their careers, lessons learned and best practices. This will inspire the next generation of chemical engineers to make tough decisions and propel their careers in directions they normally did not seen possible while exposing new areas where chemical engineers have impacted different industries.
