Kate Ziemer on the Importance of Process Safety Education
Kate Ziemer, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Associate Vice Provost of Curriculum at Northeastern University talks with CCPS Executive Director Shakeel Kadri about importance of undergraduate chemical engineering process safety education and how CCPS's initiatives are shaping safety culture for students and faculty.
Faculty and students need to understand that safety is a lot more than protective equipment and MSDS sheets.
Having worked in industry for DuPont and now as a professor at Northeastern, Kate brings a unique perspective to process safety education. She's passionately committed to CCPS's ultimate goal of having 100% of graduating bachelor-degree chemical engineers to be trained and knowledgeable about process safety. Kate has been an active AIChE volunteer for more than 16 years, has written 70 publications and done more than 110 presentations on education and research topics. A Fellow of AIChE, Kate is also a past Institute director, immediate past chair of the Societal Impact Operating Council, and has served multiple AIChE committees, divisions and forums.
Thanks to the early leadership support from The Dow Chemical Company and Chevron, both Founders' Circle members, the Undergraduate Process Safety Initiative was successfully launched in November 2015. This program is one of the core initiatives of the AIChE Foundation's, Doing a World of Good campaign.
